Ok I’m Back

I’ve been gone for a while. So sorry. But things will be different, I promise.

I need to get back into the blogging habit, so I’ll start small. In fact, I need your input on this one. I received an iTunes gift card for my birthday. I’ve got room for 3 more albums to purchase, but I’m a bit puzzled on what to get.

Can you recommend 3 albums for me? I’m open to different genres and styles, however lately I’m listening to indie rock, folk, hip-hop, and experimental.

Thanks!

Another Blog for ya

thirdeye blog

Some of you may or may not know where I work or what exactly I do at this mysterious job. Well now you have a better opportunity to figure that out. My place of employment, Thirdeye Design Group, has recently added a new section to its website, the Thirdeye BLOG. I’m basically in charge of it: posting pictures, adding entries, revealing embarrassing things about our little business. It’s been a fun few entries so far. So I invite you to check out the blog and, heck, while you’re there how about you subscribe to it? The Thirdeye team agreed that we didn’t want to manage/police the comments section, so all comments are always going to be off. But you’re more than welcome to (read: invited to!) leave comments over here at Sketchism. I never have a clue as to who’s reading this here blog. I promise I won’t send you viruses or critters if you do.

Simpsonism

David Uribe as a Simpsons character

This is as close as I could get to creating a Simpsons Avatar of myself. Aye Carumba! What do ya think? (Link via Brownpau).

A Fight to the Finish

I'll be there

I’m gonna do it. I’ve already told people and the majority have already given me disapproving or discouraging words to talk me out of it. But to me it’s no big deal, really. Come July 21st, I will compete in my first grappling tournament. I have 23 days left to train and prepare for it. This event, hosted by the North American Grappling Association (NAGA), will be held on a Saturday in Parkland, Florida, which is apparently near Fort Lauderdale. I need to do this event or else I’ll find another reason to delay it even longer. In the past, I haven’t entered NAGA because I was under-prepared or too busy with school to focus on it. Now I can focus the next 23 days to judo, jujitsu, conditioning, and so on. I’ve been a martial arts student now for 4 years and its about time I competed. Besides, it’s already on my list of goals and I intended on scratching it off, come July 21st.

So, if you happen to be a friend (heck, even an enemy) of mine, I invite you to come out to this event and watch me get down and dirty. I intend on having fun and winning. Let me know what you guys think. And yes, I know now that I have braces it will get complicated blah blah blah. I’ve already thought about that. That’s why God created a little thing called the mouthpiece. But thanks for your concern.

So whaddayasay? Wanna see me in action?

Abuelita Update

I want to thank all of you who have been asking about my grandmother’s condition. It’s really touching that you haven’t forgotten. I’m proud to say that my grandma was checked out of the hospital over a week ago. She is now under the care of my aunts and mother at my Aunt Claudia’s house only a few minutes west of me. They take turns staying with her at night and addressing her needs. I call her just about every night to find out how she’s doing. She complains of her body feeling sore at times and admits to having irrational fears of the worst kind sometimes. “Es la medicina,” she explains. One of the few things that brings her real comfort is having someone to pray with her. The nights when I visit, she’ll ask me to stay until the night so we can pray together. I remind her that I have friends who are praying for her by name and she thanks the Lord for them. Her paralysis is slowly fading away. The left side of her face shows more expressions these days. Her eyes are wide open and every so often she cracks a smirk large enough to force a smile. It’s a beautiful thing.

Last week she lifted her left leg a bit and I couldn’t believe it. She could bend it slightly enough to hover over the wheelchair pedal. I am told that sometimes when she yawns, her left hand will raise up ever so gently. Every inch matters these days. It is an amazing process to see her heal.

She confesses that sometimes her faith is weak. She asks for the strength to continue. As we pray in that dark room I feel a humility that is beyond my own capability. I’m referring to her’s. She talks to God with poetry and honesty. Every prayer I’ve ever said seems to be a mumble of broken words and prideful pleas. As if praying were ever really meant to be about me. But not her. She asks God to do His own will. In those quiet moments when a stillness of thoughts engulfs the room, she expresses an adoration that the saints would envy. Those heavy tears return and I can barely muster up enough air in my lungs to say Amen. But I do. And she says Amen, too.

She wants to meet these friends that I’ve been telling her about. I tell her I would like her to meet them as well. And so now I am asking if anyone would be willing to make an evening of it. I don’t have a particular day in mind, but I suppose a Saturday or Sunday would make for a good time. Anybody interested? Email me if so.

Thank you all again.

Feelin’ uncultured

Lately I’ve had a real thirst for knowledge and aesthetics that isn’t present when the school semester is in. I have time to do more book-reading, music-listening, and movie-watching. Somehow all the music I own has started to feel a bit inbred. It’s the same old thing. The radio doesn’t help either. If they’re not playing another pop song, it’s another fifteen minutes set of non stop commercials. Because of this, I’ve been left with an ignorant view on good music. The fact is I don’t do enough research on what’s good out there. I’m sure whoever reads this has a bit of music and literature that they fancy, so please do leave some recommendations on what could keep my feet a-tappin’ and my mind a-moldin’ with pleasure. If anyone is willing to send me something via snail mail that would be much appreciated as well. Just a suggestion.

I just added a section to the left (courtesy of allconsuming.net) on the books I’m currently reading or recently purchased. It’s a free service that allows you to see who else is reading the same books, and you can read what kind of feedback they have on it. I’ll be adding a section on music and movies as well. Feel free to leave suggestions on movies as well. I’ve been slowly checking out movies on my list of classics to see.

If you’re interested in mailing me any spare books or cds or movies, please email me and I’ll gladly give you my mailing address. Also, take a look at the wishlist. Maybe you own something I’ve been keeping an eye on for a while but just haven’t had the time or money to buy. Thanks!

By the way, I own a huge collection of classic literature (Shakespeare, Melville, Dickens, Twain, etc.) but I don’t know where to begin reading. So once again, a point in the right direction will be appreciated.
