Tired Yet Again

Sketch-Tired

Still trying to get back in the groove of things after my Denver trip. Nothing feels quite the same, really. I’ve been going to sleep much later and struggling to wake up in the mornings, even when I blast post-hardcore music for my alarm clock.

Halloween Horror Nights was pretty cool. For some reason I didn’t expect to stand in 95-minute lines for mediocre haunted houses. That part was a bummer. Hanging out with my classmates was a plus, though.

The Helvetica screening was amazing. Hats off to Gary Hustwit for such a powerful and simple documentary. All the designers in the theater swooned with love for it.

I totally missed all the performances I mentioned in my last entry. Actually, I attempted to see Musiq Soulchild with my brother, but when we arrived we were told the show was canceled. I wish the venue website would have mentioned something. So instead of moping around in pity as we were beginning to do, Tony and I decided to visit the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. I went up to a slot machine, played $5 and won $15 more. We used the money to buy some burgers, shakes, and chili cheese fries. Not too bad of an evening after all.

I’m glad tomorrow is Friday. I need to rest and work some more. Deadlines are approaching.

Hello There

It’s been an interesting week thus far. I’ve been attempting to recover from this small cold that’s been building up in my system. 1000mg of Vitamin C and a few expectorant pills each day should be fixing that up. I’ve been prudent with my homework time. Pacing myself with each project, just a bit every day, is a lot more satisfying and productive. I’ll keep a note of how I’m progressing to see how effective I’ve been with the 2 current projects I’m on. The sketch above is yet another move towards the typographical direction I’m excited about pursuing. Oh, and Barnes and Noble is definitely my favorite place to do homework.

Tomorrow I’ll be attending the Miami premiere of Helvetica, sponsored by none other than my employer and my school. For more information on this event, please visit the Miami AIGA website.

Then on Friday I’ll be attending the Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios with 110 of my peers from school. I haven’t been to this event in about 8 years, so I’m excited to revisit the great haunted houses and rides produced by the Universal Studios team. From what I remember, the theme park staff dresses up like zombies and other scary creatures and they walk around through the foggy night scaring tourists. I’m sure a few of us will get terrified and embarrassed. I’ll have my camera ready. It’s just too bad that visitors aren’t allowed to dress up and scare others like we did once before. We’ll make the trip to Orlando and back on the same evening. It’s going to be a long night.

I hear that Musiq Soulchild will be performing this weekend. Next week there will also be performances by Mute Math, Eisley, Mae, M.I.A., and Ben Harper. It’s definitely going to be a wonderful weekend.

Fun’s Over

I’m typing this instead of running off to class like a good boy. And so begins the rush of the everyday life once again. Yesterday I met up with my class/travel mates and we laughed about our trip as we looked at some of the photos. But now it’s time to worry about deadlines and artwork. I suppose that’s not such a bad thing to worry about. After that long weekend of talking and viewing design, I’m definitely inspired once again. Alright, time to jet out of here! Oh and if you haven’t heard, the Helvetica film is coming to Miami in week and a half. Click here for the details. I’ll definitely be there.

AIGA Conference 2007 Review

I don’t know how to begin this entry. I’ll start with “whoooooa that was awesome”. Let me continue by thanking all the people who accompanied me on this trip. The 11 other people who made up The Denver Dozen (in no particular order): WutDatEyu, Brown, SoSorry, Hotdog, La Sueca, Olgita, Dopey, Trixy, Luigi, Chavín, and Fleckles. Of course, I also want to thank my professors and dean: Elemento, YouseGuys, and the honorable Maggy Cuesta (I’ll leave you alone, since you sign the checks). Thank you all! You made this trip unbelievably fun, hilarious, and memorable. I’m afraid the rest of the post is full of inside jokes. But you can try to figure them out if you like!

I realize we have a policy of “What Happens in Denver, Stays in Denver”, but there are a few moments worth noting:

  • Faces getting scribbled on while sleeping.

  • Crowds chanting “o-KAY!” on the dance floor.

  • Snoring through a speech.

  • Limited edition Ed Fella prints.

  • Falling in love over 10 times.

  • Free pancake room service.

  • Getting locked out of a session.

  • Snowboarding on the Texas airport metro mover.

  • Jumping on the beds.

  • Jumping on the sidewalks.

  • 3 flavors of Hatorade.

  • Meeting the founder of KidRobot.

  • Finding out that guy didn’t really steal my pen.

  • Taking over the Sketch Wall – Miami Style.

  • Breakdance competitions.

  • “That’s a ladies drink.”

  • No spanish music!?

  • Lame Kerning jokes.

  • Command X making women cry.

  • Foot massages.

  • Hot wings are really hot – who knew?

  • Twenty dollars on chocolate.

  • The yellow suitcase.

I’m sure if I take the time to think a little longer, I could fill this page up even more. But I get the feeling most people have already stopped reading by this point. Click the picture below for my collection of photos of the trip. Note: the photos are randomized. Also, use your left/right arrow keys to scroll through the photos. I hope they make you smile.

Northwest Bound

I’m in process of packing for my trip to Colorado. I fly out tomorrow morning along with my classmates. There’s a stop in Dallas before we arrive in Denver. I’m definitely excited to be traveling. This will contribute to my goal of traveling to 4 places outside of Florida this year. Two down, two to go.

I’m running on fumes again, due to the fact that I stayed up all night at work finishing a school project. It was worth it. The class liked the work and I got good feedback. As soon as I have photos, I’ll post them on here.

Well I’d better finish packing and start sleeping. Good night.

Brace Yourself

Final Poster

Monday was the big day. I presented my illustration, poster, and collateral along with my 4 teammates in front of a panel that included 2 deans and 2 professors. Before we were ready my teammate Cattia asked me if I was nervous.

“Nope. I just want to get this over with already.”
“Same here,” she replied.

Well it appears that all the weeks of slaving over this project were worth it. After a month and a half of sketching, redrawing, tight pencil renderings, color-comps, layouts, brainstorming, phone calls, emails, sighing, stretching, and wincing at back pains, we were told it was the best presentation they had seen to date. Now, I should probably explain how this whole presentation was structured. Picture The Apprentice, with less cameras, less Trump, and a lot more kind things to say about teammates. There were two teams: The Manhattan Project and Team Apple. Cattia and I were the art directors for Team Apple. The project was to create a poster for the Chrysler Building in New York City. The illustration had to be hand-made. No digital illustrations for this one.

The challenge was to create the best illustration, poster, and a collateral piece that would tie in the illustration to the product. The winning team would receive an extra-credit A for a semester that only had 3 (very time-consuming) projects. It’s an important A to have.

Well, I’m sad to say that my team didn’t win the competition. But, as the panel explained, we were very close. All the posters were amazing. What tipped the scale in the end was the craft-work in the collaterals of The Manhattan Project. Their products included t-shirts, shot glasses, playing cards, matches, and an ashtray. My team’s collaterals included a notebook, a travel chess set, a postcard set, a 3d frame of the poster, and a collection of wine bottles which incorporated one of the illustrations on each bottle.

What matters is that it’s over and that the panel was impressed.

And now for the exciting news. Today I had braces installed onto the top row of my mouth. I was glad to finally have it done after waiting quite a few years. The bad news is that I have to refrain from certain hard foods… for two years. Oh well. It’s a small price to pay for the straight teeth I’ve been dreaming about. Right now I can’t really chew anything because the pressure is extra hard on my mouth. So I treated myself to soup, pudding, and a milkshake today. I’d say it’s a good week so far.

So close

Next week will be an eventful one. I will have finished my illustration class, turned in an essay I haven’t begun, had braces installed, and taken my science final. I look forward to it with joy and relief. It will be the beginning of the end in a sense. I wonder what 2 years of having metal in my mouth will feel like. Gotta run, class break time is over.
