The Tie That Binds

Tie close-up

Not too long ago, I briefly mentioned that I was heading to Tallahassee for an event that I had a part in. It’s time I explained a little further. Every year, my school holds a tie design competition open to its graphic design students for an event called Miami-Dade County Days. Here’s how the official website describes it,
“Miami-Dade County Days in Tallahassee is a two-day celebration of our community during the Florida Legislative Session. Dade Days is considered the premier event during the Session, bringing with us more than 1000 people representing over 200 organizations, from both the private and public sector. It is a wonderful opportunity for participants to meet with our Miami-Dade Delegation as well as with Florida’s Legislators.”

My fellow students are supposed to design the tie based on the theme provided by Dade Days. This year’s theme was “A Kaleidescope Of Colors“. When we were finished designing them, we had to present a printed version to a panel of judges who would decide which tie would represent the entire city of Miami for the annual event. The winner would have the design printed on hundreds of ties and scarves, and would have the opportunity to fly to Tallahassee for the event, as well as receive a cash prize. This year I was fortunate enough to win the competition. (And just in time because I was short for money and I had to pay off some bills!)

My reaction to the entire trip was one of perplexity and excitement. This was my first time seeing my artwork in a public forum, not to mention on clothes. I was receiving compliments from politicians and strangers, shaking hands and taking photographs with people with much more political clout – I’m talking mayors, governors, senators, chairmen, that type of stuff.

Unfortunately, 48 hours prior to my trip I had a bad case of food poisoning that I took with me to Tallahassee. But all in all it was an exciting but strange experience, one that I was glad to undergo (minus the barfing).

Without further ado, here are the pictures.

Well I’ve been quiet for a while. But plenty has happened.

  • I won a tie design competition and I will be flying out to Tallahassee this week to see it worn by a few hundred people at a conference. I’m pretty excited about that.

  • I’m the owner of a brand new Wii. My brother and I split the cost of the machine and the new Smash Brothers Brawl. Playing online against Cory has been a blast.

  • Celebrations. I’ve been out and about with some of my classmates celebrating birthdays at bowling alleys, bars, and a few clubs. Now I know why I’m broke.

  • I designed my graduation show website. Go on over to mu-dai.com for details on the event. You’re all invited to come mix and mingle with food, drink, and art.

  • I hung out with Nat for an evening while she was in town last week. It’s always a fun time when we get together.

  • I’d say about 4 more friends of mine are getting married. This leaves me with about 2.6 friends left to hang out with.

  • I’m starting to listen to opera. So far I’ve acquired a Pavarotti 2-disc set and I’m enjoying it.

  • I’m going to submit to another few design competitions.

I can’t seem to remember anything else at the moment.

A Quick Procrastination

It’s late and I’m working on 2 projects. I would rather be sleeping. The above is a sketch I made on Friday while listening to a lecture. It’s a drawing of Brent, whom I also made into a cartoon during last year’s Blogathon.

Back to work!

I’m really enjoying the quiet evenings I have to myself. For the past week or so I’ve been getting home, eating dinner, and shortly after taking a nap. Usually I’ll wake up an hour later and let the grogginess wear off with a good magazine and a fresh cup of coffee. Once I’m fully awake it’s time for music and artwork.

I’m doing some hand-lettering for a package design project I’m working on. The above image is a glimpse of a few letters and numbers I did with a sharpie. I’ll be combining these with some typed out letters as well.

Alrighty, well I’m going to get back to my project. Cheers.

Graphic Art is Hard

Being a Fine Arts major has its perks. We’ve officially hit the middle of the semester and there are no essays to write or special quizzes to take. Essentially all we’ve got working for us (or against us) is our attendance, class participation, and our completed projects. A few other relieving bits of news:

  • I know what I will be presenting for my Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) show coming up in April . I’m excited and anxious to do it.

  • I leave to New York next week with my graduating class. The beauty of the trip is that it will be completely free. Two prominent art collectors donated $10,000 apiece to make this trip possible. What a blessing!

  • I aced my History of Graphic design quiz this week. That’s three in a row. I feel pretty darn good about myself. Especially after trying to remember all those European designer names. Rodchenko, Marinetti, Apollinaire, Mallevich, and on and on.

  • My graphic design class will focus the rest of the semester on preparing for our BFA show.

This last point is a huge relief. We designers need all the time we can get for this show. You see, Graphic Design is the step child of the fine arts community in our school. The nature of our profession is that we use our creativity and skills to communicate for a client. In a sense, we’re interpreters for some one else’s message. Well our BFA show requires us to make our own message and put it on a wall. Many of us have been in a panic for the past months trying to find our own message. Now that we can focus our class time on this, we’ll be able to flesh out the ideas and pieces better.

I still have quite a load to carry before the semester is over. It’s time to get back to it. I’ll post the BFA show details soon.

It Looms Over Me

It’s been a rough few days. I’m overwhelmed with the tasks at hand. In particular, I’m trying to figure out what kind of work to submit for my Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) show in April. I’ve been going back and forth with doing hand-painted pieces, digital works, illustrated social commentaries, and all other possible solutions. I feel boxed in and it’s terrible.

I’ve made a list called Things to Worry About which highlights all the deadlines and obligations haunting me right now. It’s actually quite therapeutic for me to face all these demons in a single text file. Now the strategy calls for addressing each one. I’m attempting to find a place for each task in my calendar so I can eventually get rid of them. Next thing I need to do is turn down every other offer* that comes my way. I’ve committed to too many things now and it’s finally come back bite me in the foot. Well no more, I say! I’ll be politely declining invitations to work on projects until I can get things under control again. Just thinking about it makes me more anxious. I’d better go to sleep before this monitor feels the wrath of my jab. Good night.

*If you want to buy me lunch, that’s cool. I’ll try not to turn that down. ;]
