These are the first 10 pieces for my Life Drawing class. For now this is the subject matter I will focus on: letters and books. They are each 9”x12”, and varying in graphite and ink.
The overall consensus during my critique was that I need to continue emphasizing a background, devote more time to each piece, work on creating a better tonal range for each drawing, and continue in the direction of actual words instead of just random letters.
It’s a rusty beginning, but I look forward to improving throughout the semester. Thoughts?
Not too long ago, I briefly mentioned that I was heading to Tallahassee for an event that I had a part in. It’s time I explained a little further. Every year, my school holds a tie design competition open to its graphic design students for an event called Miami-Dade County Days. Here’s how the official website describes it,
“Miami-Dade County Days in Tallahassee is a two-day celebration of our community during the Florida Legislative Session. Dade Days is considered the premier event during the Session, bringing with us more than 1000 people representing over 200 organizations, from both the private and public sector. It is a wonderful opportunity for participants to meet with our Miami-Dade Delegation as well as with Florida’s Legislators.”
My fellow students are supposed to design the tie based on the theme provided by Dade Days. This year’s theme was “A Kaleidescope Of Colors“. When we were finished designing them, we had to present a printed version to a panel of judges who would decide which tie would represent the entire city of Miami for the annual event. The winner would have the design printed on hundreds of ties and scarves, and would have the opportunity to fly to Tallahassee for the event, as well as receive a cash prize. This year I was fortunate enough to win the competition. (And just in time because I was short for money and I had to pay off some bills!)
My reaction to the entire trip was one of perplexity and excitement. This was my first time seeing my artwork in a public forum, not to mention on clothes. I was receiving compliments from politicians and strangers, shaking hands and taking photographs with people with much more political clout – I’m talking mayors, governors, senators, chairmen, that type of stuff.
Unfortunately, 48 hours prior to my trip I had a bad case of food poisoning that I took with me to Tallahassee. But all in all it was an exciting but strange experience, one that I was glad to undergo (minus the barfing).
It’s been really quiet here on Sketchism lately. But that’s only because I’ve been swamped with graduation stuff. And since we’re talking about graduation stuff…
I want to invite all of you to the my Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) show tonight. There will be plenty of goodies at the show. I hope to see you devout readers and friends there.

Well I’ve been quiet for a while. But plenty has happened.
I won a tie design competition and I will be flying out to Tallahassee this week to see it worn by a few hundred people at a conference. I’m pretty excited about that.
I’m the owner of a brand new Wii. My brother and I split the cost of the machine and the new Smash Brothers Brawl. Playing online against Cory has been a blast.
Celebrations. I’ve been out and about with some of my classmates celebrating birthdays at bowling alleys, bars, and a few clubs. Now I know why I’m broke.
I designed my graduation show website. Go on over to mu-dai.com for details on the event. You’re all invited to come mix and mingle with food, drink, and art.
I hung out with Nat for an evening while she was in town last week. It’s always a fun time when we get together.
I’d say about 4 more friends of mine are getting married. This leaves me with about 2.6 friends left to hang out with.
I’m starting to listen to opera. So far I’ve acquired a Pavarotti 2-disc set and I’m enjoying it.
I’m going to submit to another few design competitions.
I can’t seem to remember anything else at the moment.
It’s late and I’m working on 2 projects. I would rather be sleeping. The above is a sketch I made on Friday while listening to a lecture. It’s a drawing of Brent, whom I also made into a cartoon during last year’s Blogathon.
I’m really enjoying the quiet evenings I have to myself. For the past week or so I’ve been getting home, eating dinner, and shortly after taking a nap. Usually I’ll wake up an hour later and let the grogginess wear off with a good magazine and a fresh cup of coffee. Once I’m fully awake it’s time for music and artwork.
I’m doing some hand-lettering for a package design project I’m working on. The above image is a glimpse of a few letters and numbers I did with a sharpie. I’ll be combining these with some typed out letters as well.
Alrighty, well I’m going to get back to my project. Cheers.
