It’s late and I’m working on 2 projects. I would rather be sleeping. The above is a sketch I made on Friday while listening to a lecture. It’s a drawing of Brent, whom I also made into a
cartoon during last year’s Blogathon.
Back to work!

Being a Fine Arts major has its perks. We’ve officially hit the middle of the semester and there are no essays to write or special quizzes to take. Essentially all we’ve got working for us (or against us) is our attendance, class participation, and our completed projects. A few other relieving bits of news:
- I know what I will be presenting for my Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) show coming up in April . I’m excited and anxious to do it.
- I leave to New York next week with my graduating class. The beauty of the trip is that it will be completely free. Two prominent art collectors donated $10,000 apiece to make this trip possible. What a blessing!
- I aced my History of Graphic design quiz this week. That’s three in a row. I feel pretty darn good about myself. Especially after trying to remember all those European designer names. Rodchenko, Marinetti, Apollinaire, Mallevich, and on and on.
- My graphic design class will focus the rest of the semester on preparing for our BFA show.
This last point is a huge relief. We designers need all the time we can get for this show. You see, Graphic Design is the step child of the fine arts community in our school. The nature of our profession is that we use our creativity and skills to communicate for a client. In a sense, we’re interpreters for some one else’s message. Well our BFA show requires us to make our own message and put it on a wall. Many of us have been in a panic for the past months trying to find our own message. Now that we can focus our class time on this, we’ll be able to flesh out the ideas and pieces better.
I still have quite a load to carry before the semester is over. It’s time to get back to it. I’ll post the BFA show details soon.

Hey everyone. It’s 1:30 in the morning and my family is still up and at it. We always wait until midnight on Christmas Eve to celebrate by exchanging gifts, hugs, and kisses. It’s always an emotional thing for us. Above is a picture of a handful of my cousins with my brother and me tonight.
Merry Christmas everyone! Thanks to all of you who have been a part of my life. I have been blessed with your kindness.

Let’s see. I think it’s time I listed a few of the highlights and lowlights of the past few days.
- I turned in my swatchbook assignment for my Graphic Design class. Got good feedback.
- Did a new scratch board piece and showed it to my Portfolio class. Good feedback as well.
- Bought a new scanner. It’s a thing of beauty.
- Also bought a good APC battery backup. (I have to mention these purchases because I barely buy anything outside of food.)
- Bought the new Rilo Kiley album.
- Jenny Lewis is still a fox.
- Missed the Rilo Kiley show because I was finishing a project.
- Was in the passenger seat of Yuen’s car when he almost got a traffic ticket. The off-duty cop opted for a stern warning instead.
- Had some logos rejected by a client. Back to the drawing board.
- Getting ready to fly to Colorado with 11 other classmates for the AIGA conference. I’ll be gone for a few days.
- Learned the 14 characteristics of Modernism via a series of hand movements I choreographed.
- Been enjoying the new season of Heroes and The Office.
- Wondering when LOST will be revived.
- In the process of reading 5 books. Keeps me busy.
- Attended the memorial service of my friend Edeliel Veguilla. He was an inspiring guy.
- Saw a lot of friendly faces I hadn’t seen a while. I love you guys.
- Interested in writing poetry. Starting with limericks.
- Today is Heredes’ birthday. You’re gettin’ old, boy!
- Sarah, have a safe trip!
That’s it for now. I’ll aim to write more frequently, especially now that I have a scanner to show off some of these new sketches.

I apologize for not writing lately. These projects have been taking up most of my time. I’m actually working on one right now, but I mustered up enough guilty feelings to write a new post. The sketch above is from my high school sketchbook. I remember drawing these 2 passengers on a train ride home. The guy at the top was a construction worker, the woman on the bottom was a grandmother. I like the fact that I added some captions next to them. I may continue doing that kind of thing from now on. Alrighty, well I’m getting back to designing stuff. Have a good weekend.
They’re so peaceful at that age. Lets give him a moment to pray, shall we?

I’ve been awfully busy now that school started. I’m attempting to make good use of my time by working on my design projects at home and in school. Seeing how I’m pretty exhausted right now, I’ll just present an illustration I did last semester. The assignment was to juxtapose an image of someone “shaving while riding”. So I did a scratch board illustration of a businessman riding a shark to work. I hadn’t done a scratch board piece since high school and I was eager to test those waters (no pun intended, but I’m glad I said it). My brother was gracious enough to be the model. I’ll give you a hint, he’s the one riding the shark. The final piece is 12”x9”. It is colored digitally. Enjoy!
