Looks like the sketchbook look is popular in animation right now. Check out this cool music video for The Beast, by Angus & Julia Stone.
(Thanks for telling me about them, Andrea)
Boy, I really need to start animating. I love everything about this animated commercial for V Water. I’ll be whistling that tune all day. Enjoy!

I just finished watching the Danielson Movie. I’d heard about them for a while without really ever investigating them. So I watched the dvd and came out of it feeling quite inspired and eager to listen to their albums. I’m also impressed at their genuine faith and how open they are in sharing that through their art and with the people they meet. These are my kind of people.
One important figure in the documentary is none other than Sufjan Stevens, a close friend of the Danielson Famile, who filled in on practically all the band roles at some point throughout their touring. The documentary highlights how he eventually became a musical star. I’ve been a fan from the moment I heard him pluck at the banjo, so being able to see him interact with the rest of the band was absolutely great.
And so with all this inspiration I did 3 things. I updated my Goals page with a short list of people I’d like to meet, I purchased the Danielson Ships album, and I bought Sufjan’s Seven Swans album. Hooray for new music!
Here’s one of Danielson’s latest music videos, Did I Step On Your Trumpet?

This happened about 30 minutes ago. I wish I would have said more. I’ll make up for it next time by saying something smooth like, “Hey there sweetheart, don’t worry about the gas. I’m all Diesel.”
Chicks dig that kinda stuff.

I don’t know how to begin this entry. I’ll start with “whoooooa that was awesome”. Let me continue by thanking all the people who accompanied me on this trip. The 11 other people who made up The Denver Dozen (in no particular order): WutDatEyu, Brown, SoSorry, Hotdog, La Sueca, Olgita, Dopey, Trixy, Luigi, ChavÃn, and Fleckles. Of course, I also want to thank my professors and dean: Elemento, YouseGuys, and the honorable Maggy Cuesta (I’ll leave you alone, since you sign the checks). Thank you all! You made this trip unbelievably fun, hilarious, and memorable. I’m afraid the rest of the post is full of inside jokes. But you can try to figure them out if you like!
I realize we have a policy of “What Happens in Denver, Stays in Denver”, but there are a few moments worth noting:
- Faces getting scribbled on while sleeping.
- Crowds chanting “o-KAY!” on the dance floor.
- Snoring through a speech.
- Limited edition Ed Fella prints.
- Falling in love over 10 times.
- Free pancake room service.
- Getting locked out of a session.
- Snowboarding on the Texas airport metro mover.
- Jumping on the beds.
- Jumping on the sidewalks.
- 3 flavors of Hatorade.
- Meeting the founder of KidRobot.
- Finding out that guy didn’t really steal my pen.
- Taking over the Sketch Wall – Miami Style.
- Breakdance competitions.
- “That’s a ladies drink.”
- No spanish music!?
- Lame Kerning jokes.
- Command X making women cry.
- Foot massages.
- Hot wings are really hot – who knew?
- Twenty dollars on chocolate.
- The yellow suitcase.
I’m sure if I take the time to think a little longer, I could fill this page up even more. But I get the feeling most people have already stopped reading by this point. Click the picture below for my collection of photos of the trip. Note: the photos are randomized. Also, use your left/right arrow keys to scroll through the photos. I hope they make you smile.

Let’s see. I think it’s time I listed a few of the highlights and lowlights of the past few days.
- I turned in my swatchbook assignment for my Graphic Design class. Got good feedback.
- Did a new scratch board piece and showed it to my Portfolio class. Good feedback as well.
- Bought a new scanner. It’s a thing of beauty.
- Also bought a good APC battery backup. (I have to mention these purchases because I barely buy anything outside of food.)
- Bought the new Rilo Kiley album.
- Jenny Lewis is still a fox.
- Missed the Rilo Kiley show because I was finishing a project.
- Was in the passenger seat of Yuen’s car when he almost got a traffic ticket. The off-duty cop opted for a stern warning instead.
- Had some logos rejected by a client. Back to the drawing board.
- Getting ready to fly to Colorado with 11 other classmates for the AIGA conference. I’ll be gone for a few days.
- Learned the 14 characteristics of Modernism via a series of hand movements I choreographed.
- Been enjoying the new season of Heroes and The Office.
- Wondering when LOST will be revived.
- In the process of reading 5 books. Keeps me busy.
- Attended the memorial service of my friend Edeliel Veguilla. He was an inspiring guy.
- Saw a lot of friendly faces I hadn’t seen a while. I love you guys.
- Interested in writing poetry. Starting with limericks.
- Today is Heredes’ birthday. You’re gettin’ old, boy!
- Sarah, have a safe trip!
That’s it for now. I’ll aim to write more frequently, especially now that I have a scanner to show off some of these new sketches.

Here’s my first of hopefully many sketches with text. I’ve decided to focus my body of work on typography, addressing the topics that
concern me. I’m really excited about this new direction. My work will ultimately be, I believe, on scratchboard. But for now I will work with different materials to see if there are better ways to communicate through my artwork. The image above is an experimentation with text forming imagery.
