I’m taking Illustration class this semester. I was a bit unhappy about signing up for it, mostly because I dreaded the time I would have to take it. Waking up at 5:30am to get to an 8:00am class is not exactly my favorite way to spend a morning. But it’s the measure I have to take to avoid traffic which would make my day even worse.
actually quite happy that I’m taking the course. It’s forcing me to put my ideas on paper again. If there’s anything I enjoy doing with my time its just that. I write lists down every week, make little sketches, update goals, jot down potential jokes, etc. I don’t know that it can be considered a hobby (an amateur note-taker?) but it’s definitely therapeutic for me. It helps me sleep at night when I don’t have to think anymore. Putting ideas on paper takes just takes the pressure off the ol’ noggin.
Part of our assignment for each project we do in this class is to provide the client, (i.e. our professor) with 50 thumbnail sketches. Why 50? It’s a challenge. It forces me to think outside the box. It gets me out of my comfort zone. It’s a practice I want to incorporate into my professional life from now on. Whenever I have a client I would like to take the time out to make 50 thumbnails in order to come up with the most creative results. Sometimes the first ideas are the best. Often they are the most obvious, the most trite. So it’s best to explore areas I wouldn’t have thought of at first.
Yes, I realize the above image doesn’t show 50 thumbnail sketches. There were 2 other pages and I didn’t feel like flooding the page up with ‘em. Plus I have all kinds of little notes and stuff. Dangit, maybe I should upload them. Alright. Let me try to get out of my comfort zone.

i always keep a notepad and pen/pencil next to my bed at night. when i’m laying there with a thousand things going through my head i have to write them down and clear my mind in order to fall asleep. i’ve experimented with not writing things down and found that i would stay up really late…like 6 a.m. late.
cool sketches btw!
as long as you sleep better at night, i’m cool! lol keep up the good work dabed!
Well, I’m glad I stopped by.
You have gotten so much better from last semester. Your thumbnails are beautiful, Dave…
