This morning I awoke to the sound of loud Colombian chatter. Frustrated, I stuck my head out the door and asked my father if he would politely keep the noise level down, I was trying to sleep. He apologized and walked back outside with one of my uncles to the garage. Then I remembered, it was Garage Sale day in our community. Every April the entire neighborhood puts out their unwanted goods and sells them for cheap. The past two times I was unable to participate because I was off at Spring Retreats with the church, but this time the trip was pushed back another week.
So I threw on my shirt and proceeded to see what the fuss was all about outside. I opened the door to find my driveway had become a small market place full of local bargain shoppers and charming salespeople (about 6 of my uncles and aunts). Whoa, there’s money to be made today, and I have plenty of junk I don’t want. Thinking fast I grabbed the old art kits, books, magazines, video games, vhs movies, shirts and other paraphernalia I wanted to get rid of and set them up on the side of my driveway. Slowly but surely people expressed interest in my treasures and took them off my hands for ten dollars, fifteen dollars, and that right there is 5 bucks but I’ll give it to ya for 3. Even my cousin Steph bought one of my old MICA catalogues for 2 bucks, family discount. In about 2 hours I managed to make $60. Just as I was getting ready to put the money away, I saw what was about to be my new toy.
My uncle Jose was wiping off the last bit of dust on his 1976 Pentax K1000.
“Are you selling that?” I asked him.
“Yeah, this whole set,” he replied.
“Whoa, what do you have in there?”
“Three lenses, a flash, a roll of film, a set of 6 filters and the carry-bag.”
“Does everything work okay?”
“It’s in perfect condition.”
“How much?”
“A hundred thirty.”
“What’s the family discount?”
“For family? One hundred.”
“I’ll take it.”
This beauty is pimped out with a telephoto lens, a wide angle lens, and a macro lens. I don’t even know where to begin. Needless to say I’ll be taking this with me to Cornerstone Florida in May for those hard to reach shots of head-banging, guitar-swinging artists. I’ll stay clear of the moshpits, thank you very much (At least when I want some good shots).
Another good thing about this camera, I’ll be able to use it come Fall Semester at New World. My Intro To Photo class will require a manual camera for all black and white photography. Few material things bring me as much joy as a manual camera and a well designed t-shirt. Today is definitely a good day.

It’s Enrique, glad I bought the N64 over at your house today, I was actually looking around garage sales anticipating old computer equipment and an SNES, but I’m just as happy with what I bought from you today. I’m about half way through the game now, so you know I’ve been playing alot today.
Anyway, good seeing you.
Niiiiice! think u might be able to bring it to camp? lol. i think i’m gonna ask my dad if i can borrow one of his old manual cams…. they take the best, clearest, sharpest photographs i have ever seen…. well yea, we gotta get together some time this week and organize some juegos for youth retreat
nice web…page/site….for a lack of better words, masterpiece?! its awesome! ok, talk to ya later.
luv always,
Katie
Enrique, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did back in the days. That game has some great memories attached to it. Multiplayer is the best.
Kate, yeah I guess I’ll bring it to camp. I’ll have to stock up on some film this week. Usually I bring a video camera but I’ll leave it to Robbie this year. His camera is better. I spoke to Rey about games and he recommended doing a google search for “camp games”. This week I have some major projects to work on, so I don’t think I can be in the Kendall area for too long. Let me know what you come up with.
That’s a very nice looking camera. It must work great…but nothing compares to my 1981, Vivitar XV-10, I know, I know, jealousy is written all over your face…Well have a blessed day!(You know I’m just messin’)

grats! my pentax k1000 treated me well all through my last years at DASH. jess has it now .. dunno what she thinks. anyway, enjoy the nice lenses and things that came with it too! and show us pics!
Congrats! That sounds like a sweet deal.
Yo, check it: last night i had an odd dream…you and richard padin were in it. and the three of us were walking around a farm in the middle of the night looking for something. and out of nowhere someone starts to shoot paintballs at us. so we ran around like crazy dodging paintballs…thats all i can remember. lol. i just thought it was wierd.
Also, i saw Michelle Tumero the other day while mike and i were on lincoln road…i was getting something at the gap and she snuck up on me. haha. she works at the gap (i had no clue). i miss you guys!
hows everything?
Giselle, you misread the sign on my forehead, it says JELL-O. I know, a bad marketing move.
Nat, I’ll post pictures soon. I developed some yesterday and they’re pretty sweet. Nothing very artsy fartsy, just test shots to get the hang of it. Although there’s this great shot of my dog pooping and looking straight at the camera. Eat your heart out, William Wegman.
Dani girl
Sorry about invading your dreams again. It’s funny that you mention a paintball attack because this morning I woke up with throbbing green-painted knots on my back and neck. Oh and if you happen to be at the farm again, look to see if you find my cellphone. I think I left it next to the melting clocks.
Other than that, life is just dandy. I found a nickel the other day.
yippeee! a shiny nickel! miss ya
by the way that nickel comment was mine…but i forgot to leave my name.
i know squat about manual cameras. i used to be in the photo club in 5th grade, but my memories of black labs and fumbled films have diminished.
you mean to tell me this whole time, i thought you and enrique were cousins??
guidanceI should clear things up.
The Enrique who posted above is a different one. He lives in my neighborhood.
As far as the film development process, I know as much as you do. It seems our knowledge is restricted to our fifth grade training under Miss Rossi (I think that was her name).
cool my post was deleted
yay
umm jyeah
